Structuring an India Portfolio as an NRI

Cambridge Wealth is an AMFI-registered Mutual Fund & SIF Distributor working with NRIs structuring India holdings. Its goal-linked allocation process organises scheme information around your stated goals, timelines, liquidity needs and cross-border constraints, covering mutual funds, SIFs and — subject to eligibility and minimums — PMS and AIF categories. Portfolio analysis and drift correction show where current weights sit against the allocation you set, and documentation support covers NRE/NRO records, FATCA/CRS declarations, tax residency and Form 10F.

How an India Portfolio Gets Structured

Structure decisions come before scheme decisions: which route, which account holds what, and how much of the portfolio one position has quietly become.

Structure Before Schemes

The route is the first decision, not the last. Whether India exposure sits in mutual funds and SIFs, a PIS-routed equity account, or a PMS mandate changes the tax treatment, the reporting burden and the repatriation path — before a single scheme is compared.

Concentration and Overlap Analysis

A structured review of India-side holdings for scheme overlap, single-name concentration and total portfolio liquidity. Duplicated exposure across several schemes increases concentration rather than adding diversification, and it is not visible from individual scheme statements read on their own.

Drift Correction Within Scheme Mandates

Where market movement has pulled weights away from your intended allocation, what realigning would involve inside the relevant scheme mandates, and what the transaction cost and tax consequence of closing the gap would be. The decision stays with you.

PMS and Alternatives Eligibility

PMS from a ₹50 lakh regulatory minimum, SIFs from ₹10 lakh, AIFs from ₹1 crore for an ordinary investor. Eligibility is established first, then the structural differences — mandate, reporting, exit terms — that separate them from a mutual fund holding.

Which Account Holds What

NRE interest is exempt while NRI status holds and NRO interest is taxed at source, so account placement is a structural decision rather than an administrative one. Mapping holdings to the right account is part of setting the structure.

Cross-Border Reporting Coordination

FATCA/CRS declarations, tax-residency documents, Form 10F and PIS reporting coordinated across the intermediaries involved, so two non-aligned financial years do not become two separate reconstruction exercises.

Research-Led Approach

Structure First, Products Second

Most NRI portfolios are not designed so much as accumulated — a fund bought on a visit home, an FD rolled over out of habit, a demat account opened before the move. Structure is what turns that into something answerable to a goal. Cambridge Wealth's goal-linked allocation process starts from your stated goals, timelines and liquidity needs, sets an asset allocation framework against them, and organises scheme information around that framework, including which account should hold what. Every scheme considered passes a documented 108-point research review across 5,000+ Indian investment products. You get portfolio analysis and drift correction showing where weights sit against the allocation you set, and written disclosure of how Cambridge Wealth is compensated. The decisions remain yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can NRIs invest in PMS in India, and what does it take?

Yes, subject to SEBI, RBI, FEMA, KYC and product-specific requirements, with the route and repatriation treatment depending on your residency and account structure. The regulatory minimum investment for PMS is ₹50 lakh, which is what makes it a threshold question rather than a default one.
